There are always things we can do with excess food, and instead of wasting it we should be coming up with creative ideas for maximizing the usage of these leftovers and minimizing wastage. Just think about how lucky we are to have so much food that we can afford to waste it–that is considered a luxury in some parts of the world.
Regardless, it is a feel-good moment when we get to “recycle” food items or find a use for them besides what they were originally intended for. Unfortunately, some of us are still clueless about what we should do with excess food and so today, we will discuss four awesome ways to utilize leftovers and avoid food wastage.
Apples
Apples are fine for consumption as long as there are no rotten parts or mold. After being kept in the fridge or in the fruit bowl for too long, these fruits may start getting softer. However, this is not a problem as you can easily make apple crumbles out of them, and as for excess apples in your fridge or fruit bowl, you can use them to make some delicious apple juice.
Green Vegetables
Green vegetables such as courgettes (zucchini) sometimes lose their crunch factor when kept in the fridge. So, if you’re planning on steaming your green vegetables, it’s understandable if you have some leftovers and do not want to keep them in the fridge. Fortunately, green vegetables can be used in a variety of meals including Frittatas, tacos, etc.
Overripe Banana
Bananas are very tasty and can be used in a variety of ways when they are still fresh. However, when they start going soft and turning brownish, their freshness can decline pretty quickly. These overripe bananas are still very useful in making desserts like banana bread, as long as they do not become black or start smelling, in which case, it would be advisable to throw them in the trash.
Carrots
Carrots have many uses and add a different flavor and texture to many dishes and desserts. However, even carrots can decline in quality but can still be used as long as they have not become moldy. Whether dried out or going soft, carrots that are abouty to go bad can be used in making delicious and crunchy carrot cakes.
