Ice cream is considered a treat by most people. It's probably safe to say that everyone who has walked on this Earth for more than 8 years has had ice cream at least once. Ice cream is found and loved in many forms: apple pie accompaniments, beer floats, sundaes, and the best and classic, summer cone.
On the other hand, there are Gelatos. Their popularity doesn't match that of ice creams but, they are no less delicious. This dessert originated in Italy and translates to “ice cream.” No one would be surprised if you thought ice cream and gelato are the same, just gelato having the fancier name that it does. But the truth is, these two desserts have more differences than you would think.
What Is The Difference?
For starters, a very simple way to get the concept in one's head is that gelato is the cousin of ice cream that happens to be denser, smoother, silkier, and oddly creamier. Both the desserts’ storage, preparation, and ingredients highly differ.
Cream Vs Milk Content
Both ice cream and gelato are made of a custard base of sugar, milk, and cream, with varying proportions. But the difference is that gelato contains more milk than cream while unsurprisingly, ice cream has cream more than milk.
Storage
Both the desserts are frozen, however, gelatos are a bit less frozen compared to ice cream. Gelato is frozen at 15°F, making it much easier to enjoy straight out of the freezer as it is softer, On the other hand, ice cream freezes at 0°F so that its consistency is maintained properly.
Eggs
The most up-to-date recipe for gelato tells us that this dessert contains no eggs. However, to make ice creams, egg yolks are needed.
Wrapping It Up
Whether it's ice cream or gelato, both are extremely pleasing desserts and have their own fanbases. So, don't hesitate to consume either that you prefer. Or better yet, go for both! There's nothing wrong with treating yourself with some delectable desserts.
